A fixed IP address, also known as static IP, refers to an IP that is constant and does not change. Typically, IP addresses are assigned dynamically and change at semi-frequent intervals, usually when a device connects to the network. However, with a fixed IP, an IP address is assigned to a device and remains unchanged. This can be beneficial in various scenarios, including server hosting, remote access, network configuration and security and access control.
IoT Security – Fixed private IP
A fixed IP, can be useful for remote access to your IoT SIM card, but is prone to security risks. A fixed private IP address uses a VPN tunnel to mitigate these risks. Rather than being publically accessible, the IP address requires a log-in to connect and authenticate. A VPN tunnel reduces the risk of unauthorised access and provides centralised protection, whilst eliminating the need to individually secure each device.
