What is LTE-M?

LTE-M, also known as LTE-MTC (Machine Type Communication), is a low-power, wide-area cellular technology designed specifically for IoT applications. It is considered an LPWAN technology. LTE-M is based on the commonly used LTE technology and therefore operates in a licensed spectrum. The technology offers a compromise between the required bandwidth and power consumption of IoT devices. Compared to traditional LTE networks, it has improved coverage, longer battery life, and better signal penetration.

LTE-M is optimised for applications that require low to medium data rates, extended battery life, and enhanced coverage in indoor and underground environments. The technology is suitable to a wide range of IoT use cases, including asset trackers, smart meters, industrial monitoring, and wearables. It has become popular as a cellular connectivity option for IoT deployments that require reliable, low-power and wide range technology. Not every provider has enabled the NB-IoT technology for their networks yet or officially discloses it.
